A Seasonal Shift: Resetting Daily Rhythms to Finish the Year Strong
An essay on realigning what matters most in autumn.
As this past August gave way to September, I felt an unmistakable pull toward change. The summer had been a whirlwind: bright sun, long hot days, and scattered routines for our family. I began thinking deeply about how I wanted to restructure my days and nurture the healthiest version of myself before the year’s end. In the weeks leading up to the autumn equinox, I started making small shifts in my daily life, and the result has been a noticeable sense of peace.
Here are a few practices that have been realigning my energy.
I’m Greeting the Day Instead of Chasing It. ☕️🧺
All summer long, I slipped into the habit of waking up at the same moment that the baby stirred. It meant rolling out of bed at the last possible second: rushing into clothes, grabbing something (often unhealthy) to eat, and pouring all my energy into getting the baby ready while I was still half awake. Starting my mornings this way felt chaotic, and that chaos set the tone for the rest of the day. I was tired, scattered, and constantly trying to catch up.
So instead of chasing my days, I’ve decided to greet them. I now rise an hour and a half earlier each morning, giving myself time to set a calm, intentional pace. I eat a nourishing breakfast, read a devotion, and thoughtfully choose what to wear. Even after just a few days of this practice, my whole day feels different: more grounded, more peaceful, and more my own.
I’m Listening to the Language of My Body. ☁️🍃
Summer can be a sly season, soft and golden, yet quick to lure you away from caring for yourself. I drank too little water, let my muscles go unstretched, and leaned too heavily on easy takeout meals. With the season turning, I began longing for a steadier, stronger rhythm, and a way to feel my own energy rise again.
Now, I keep a schedule for drinking water throughout the day, small pauses of care woven into my hours. Dan and I discovered a local athletic club with all the amenities that we’ve been looking for, and we’ll be joining this fall. And together, we’ve sketched out weekly meal plans, complete with weekend prep, to bring more intention to our table. These shifts feel like a gentle but powerful realignment, helping me feel stronger, healthier, and more at home in my own body.
I’m Creating Weekly Rotations That Feel Good. 📝💫
Another way I’ve been adding intentionality to my weeks is by creating a realistic, attainable daily schedule. Over the past few months, I often felt like I was drowning in to-do lists, unable to reach the projects that I truly cared about because my days were slipping into a blur of moments.
So I sat down and designed a weekly rhythm I could actually follow. It took some trial and error -- swapping days, rethinking tasks -- but eventually I found a flow that fit. Ironically, putting structure in place has given me more freedom. And with a clear framework, I finally have the space to focus on the projects and work that matter most to me.
I’m Setting Boundaries with Social Media. 📖🕯️
I’ve never felt as affected by social media as I have since becoming a new mom. The endless stream of news and noise and comparison can feel overwhelming, yet it’s still dangerously addictive to scroll late into the night after the baby has fallen asleep.
After many attempts to simply delete apps, I chose a different approach: clear boundaries. My golden rule became this: create more than I consume. I use social media to connect with other writers and artists and to share my own work, but will now reach out to real-life friends through meaningful, intentional communication.
I’ve set gentle limits on what I watch and who I follow. Like everything else, it has taken trial and error, but this mindful approach has left me calmer, more focused, and more connected to what truly matters…
As the weather turns and the days grow shorter, I’ve realized that small choices in how I wake, nourish my body, structure my time, and engage with the world can shape my daily energy. I feel not only more aligned with myself, but more at home in the quiet, unfolding pace of everyday life. If you’re reading this and crave that kind of change, I hope that you can find it too. ☁️🍂

Love this. I’ve been creating monthly curriculums or intentions for what topics and things I want to consume. It’s been so fun!
